James Allison, Some thoughts on the atonement

Atonement is primarily a liturgy rather than a theory

“if you have a theory of atonement – something grasped – you have something that people can “get right”, and then be on the inside of the good guys. “We’re the people who are covered by the blood; we’re the ones who are okay, the ones who are good; and then there are those others who aren’t.” In other words, rather than undergoing atonement, we’re people who grasp onto the idea of the atonement…  If you are undergoing atonement it means that you are constantly in the process of being approached by someone who is forgiving you.”

This is going to take some time to digest, but it has caught my imagination.  James Allison makes some excellent observations about atonement in scripture!    If you are at all intrigued, you should read the article:
